How does a septic tank work?

Definition:

A sewage-disposal tank in which a continuous flow of waste material is decomposed by anaerobic bacteria.

Architect:

A watertight, covered receptacle designed and constructed to receive the discharge of sewage from a building sewer, separate solids from the liquid, digest organic matter and store digested solids through a period of detention, and allow the clarified liquids to discharge for final disposal.

Function:

Septic tanks do not treat sewage; they merely remove some solids and condition the sanitary flow so that it can be safely disposed of to a subsurface facility such as a tile field, leaching pools, or buried sand filter. The organic solids retained in the tank undergo a process of liquefaction and anaerobic decomposition by bacterial organisms. The clarified septic tank effluent is highly odorous, contains finely divided solids, and may contain enteric pathogenic organisms. The small amounts of gases produced by the anaerobic bacterial action are usually vented and dispersed to the atmosphere without noticeable odor or ill effects.

Treatment:

Sewage treatment, or domestic wastewater treatment, is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater, both runoff and domestic. It includes physical, chemical and biological processes to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants. Its objective is to produce a waste stream (or treated effluent) and a solid waste or sludge also suitable for discharge or reuse back into the environment. This material is often inadvertently contaminated with toxic organic and inorganic compounds.

Do you have any extra information on the decomposition by anaerobic bacteria? Very good article so far. And quick too!

It sounds like you have problems with a septic system? Have you just had it pumped out or have you been using caustic washing powders and the like. these will kill the bacteria so you have to restart the culture. If this is the case, find a dead bird, a chook is great and add to the tank, this will restart the bacterial culture. There are some proprietory septic tank products that also help.

If I am off the track.... what is the problem???

I have always wondered exactly what goes on in there- nice and succinct! Is that the same for home septic systems as well that people have on farms etc?

Mungus 3 years ago

Yes, the system is exactly the same. Over about the last 10 yrs or so, more advanced systems have been developed which really clarify the water so you can use it for irrigating trees, vegetable plots etc. The water is NOT drinkable and ideally should be applied via irrigation systems under mulch, but it is a brilliant way of recycling water in these dry times. The systems are not cheap but very much worth the expense if you are not on town water and rely on bores, stream or rain water. They are though still very sensitive to agressive chemicals, so bio-degradable soaps & detergents must be used, but that's no bad thing.

Septic tanks are one of the most useful inventions in modern history. Before humans we able to safely process our own waste we had a lot more disease outbreaks, most notably the Great Plague. Thanks for this great article!
